There are a few rows of yews on either side of the pool. During my first visit, I ran down the center of two rows and it felt so nice! He used it for his rehabilitation and his wife had the yews transplanted there for him from other areas of the garden. The incredible mid-century pool, surrounded by grass and rows of yews (the tall trees) looks like it came straight out of a Slim Aaron’s photograph in Palm Springs.

It also serves as a gardening and horticultural resource for the entire area, offering lectures, blogs, and lecture series. As the director of horticulture, responsible for all the growing things at Filoli, Jim Salyards knows those grounds intimately, but one spot among the thousands whispers to him, no matter the season. Located 30 miles south of San Francisco, Filoli is nestled on a slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains and surrounded by the protected Peninsula watershed. The meeting took place at a giant 20th-century estate built by a family that made its fortune in the gold rush. The ideal oasis for celebrations, meetings, corporate and team building events for groups from 10 to 1,000, Filoli has something for every clientele. A walkway made of trees through which guests can stroll.
After their deaths, the 654-acre estate was sold to William and Lurline Roth, who continued to expand the gardens. Lurline was a particular fan of camellias – she was crazy for camellias, Salyards says – and a large variety of the shrubs can be found throughout the formal gardens. Near the estate swimming pool stands a Camperdown elm planted decades ago. In the winter, the bare limbs are blanketed with moss, and the hundreds of branches make it appear as if the tree is wearing a fascinator of clouds. In the spring, the tree leafs out in brilliant greens with long, dangling chartreuse seed pods that dance in the breeze. As the days move into summer, the tree offers a welcoming, embracing umbrella of shade; sitting beneath it, time seems to still.

Renovating Filoli’s Knot Gardens
In spring and summer they have food trucks in the shady area! They didn’t have any in this area in February, but there were multiple groups of people who brought their own food and drinks for a picnic. The Sunken Garden is a large, rectangle pond situated in front of the clock tower. There are potted flowers lined up along either side and in summer there were clusters of lily pads growing in it. It’s one of the most gorgeous spots on the entire property and can be viewed from either end (but you cannot walk on the grass as it’s roped off). There aren’t as many flowers in fall, but the orchid is open to explore and the roses are still blooming!

Summer
These tickets must be purchased in advance, even if you are already a member. Spring is by far the most popular season to visit Filoli, which means insane crowds — especially on weekends. It’s peak flower-blooming season, the weather is lovely, and everything just feels right in the world. I’ve visited every season and have experienced all the changes to the gardens and the house each season. After the death of her husband in 1963, Roth lived on alone at Filoli.

Conveniently located between San Francisco and Silicon Valley, Filoli is the ideal oasis for celebrations, meetings, corporate and team building events for groups of all sizes. The estate boasts 654 acres of beauty nestled along the slopes of California’s coastal range. Originally built as a private residence in 1917, Filoli was opened to the public in 1975 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
What’s Blooming at Filoli?
In the spring, tulips, daffodils, cherry blossoms, and, of course, wisteria take center stage. Summer is the perfect time to attend their Summer Nights program and take in the roses and dahlias. Fall gifts visitors with a kaleidoscope of autumnal colors. Filoli is a historic estate worth visiting and admiring (and if you are so inclined, frolicking through.) Please join me as we tour around the spring horticultural tableaux at Filoli. When I recently toured Filoli in Woodside, CA, this Merchant and Ivory feeling came over me.
The Walled Garden also flanks the main pathway and steps through the property. You have beautiful views of grassy steps leading up from a pond in the center. If you walk the trail next to the Rose Garden, it will lead you through a field up to a grassy area with columns. The Garden House is an all-glass l’orangerie, or greenhouse, that unsurprisingly gets beautiful light flooding through it. You can walk through it or hang out at one of the small tables on either side of it next to the brick walls.
Filoli is dedicated to connecting our rich history with a vibrant future through beauty, nature and shared stories, so that one day all people will honor nature, value unique experiences, and appreciate beauty in everyday life. Filoli, Woodside’s historic estate has long been a holiday lights destination. But the grounds are simply spectacular, with 16 acres of formal gardens, 250 fruit trees, a vegetable garden and a daffodil meadow planted with more than 75,000 spring bulbs.
It is set among the hills, one of the more isolated spots in a densely populated corner of California. The White House kept the location of the meeting secret until a day before, presumably to keep protesters from surrounding the venue. None were visible at the gates on Wednesday morning as Mr. Biden’s motorcade approached the locale, but some could be seen along the route from San Francisco. San Francisco, the host city of the summit by Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation — known as APEC, a group of 21 countries that surround the Pacific Ocean — would be too bottlenecked and too frenetic to host such a meeting.
For those who prefer outdoor concerts to hiking, the 20th annual Jazz at Filoli series begins June 27. On Sunday afternoons through September 26, performers will take to Filoli’s birch- and dogwood-shaded outdoor stage. The Roths, Salyards says, wanted the estate to be a place of horticulture significance, where people could visit and learn about the astounding aspects of nature. Before her death, Lurline ensured that would happen, refusing to sell the estate and instead agreeing to put it in the hands of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Filoli has been open for public tours of both the house and the gardens for almost 50 years.
Never miss a fabulous garden or ideas on how to design your own. There’s a table at the end of the pool where you can sit and enjoy the views, watch people walking by, and pretend you live there for a few moments. You can also see many other areas of the house, including a library/study with commissioned portrait sketches by John Singer Sargent! The kitchen is the most perfect vintage-style kitchen, complete with black and white checkered floors. Many people just wear their comfy, everyday clothes though!
